Hi, I’m Jess! Over my past 5 years teaching, I've had the privilege of guiding more than a hundred students through their individual high school journeys. In my own HSC, I obtained state rank of 2nd in NSW in English Extension 1 and 2nd in NSW in Latin Extension, achieving an ATAR of 99.95. I’ve since honed valuable insight into tailoring personalised tutoring programs to unique student’s needs and school-specific expectations, and am very excited to impart my roadmap to succeeding in HSC English onto you here at Opus. In addition, majoring in English Literature in my undergraduate at University, I’ve honed my pedagogy through tertiary study in order to set our students apart. For my students, I believe in fostering critical and independent thinking skills which are so essential to achieving success in all subject areas.

To me, English is not just about essays or exams. It is about learning how to see the world from different perspectives whilst developing critical thinking, empathy and creativity through language. As a tutor, my goal is to help students move beyond viewing English as an intimidating or outmoded subject. I believe that with the right guidance, English can be engaging, empowering and highly rewarding. I work collaboratively with students to build confidence, strengthen analytical skills, and help them appreciate the value of what they are learning while also achieving strong academic results. Overall, I aim to make English both accessible and meaningful.

Hi, I’m Grace! My outstanding results in English are a reflection of not only my own efforts, but largely the passion and dedication of the English faculty. I have felt firsthand the importance of a teacher who understands students and ignites the gift of literature. Motivated by my desire to help students enrich and be enriched by the power of words, I prioritise taking an individualised approach. I intend to warmly support my students in their personal goals, and provide detailed coaching and a friendly face through the challenges along the way.

I'm incredibly passionate about passing on my experiences and knowledge to support you in reaching your full English potential. For me, the most important part of acing English is to help you discover your own unique approach; to develop genuine interest along with improved marks. When I'm not looking for new books to read, you'll find me taking long hikes and watching history documentaries. English doesn't have to be painful! Together, we can turn it into a subject you love.

As someone who never found English super intuitive, I know that excelling in this subject is the result of sustained effort, discipline, and most importantly, the guidance of a supportive mentor. Despite being strongly STEM-oriented within my HSC subjects, I've found HSC English to be truly special in the way that crafting your pieces is a deeply personal process that sharpens how we understand and engage with the world around us. My aim would be to help you succeed mark-wise, but also grow to enjoy this subject so much more within your studies - as I have! Having experienced first hand how discouraging it can be when hard work doesn't translate into results, my approach centres on strengthening core foundations so you can translate your ideas into works you can truly be proud of.

In the spirit of a great essay, I'll keep this concise. I believe the key to mastering English lies in combining clarity, flair, and strategy. In my own learning, I placed a strong emphasis on understanding the structure and purpose underlying an essay and its components, then using that foundation to express my ideas effectively and confidently. Applying these principles to my teaching, I keep lessons engaging with clear and interactive tutorials which aim to create a fruitful and stress-free learning process tailored to each learner. As a debater at heart—speaking for the NSW Team in 2024—I especially enjoy the process of refining and finetuning an essay, a satisfaction I aim to share and recreate with my students. Equally, I find providing compelling and actionable feedback to student work deeply fulfilling, and strive to help improve both macro (thesis, paragraphing, and sub-structures) and micro (quoting, phrasing, and impression) elements. English need not be an opaque exercise of trial and error: we just need a strategic lens and the confidence to express!

Hello! I'm Michael. I graduated from Shore in 2024 and am incredibly excited to share my love of English with you. I'm a firm believer in approaching English from first principles: developing a personal and in-depth understanding of the texts. Not only does this aid in answering questions with specificity, nuance and personality, it'll also make English an enjoyable and fulfilling area of study. Together, we'll work on developing your personal voice as well as enhancing your analytical and argumentation skills which I approach from a debating background. Outside of English, I love watching films, collating playlists and hiking.

Having grown to love English throughout my HSC journey, culminating in my study of Extension 2 English, I aim to cultivate both an appreciation and a comprehensive understanding of literature in my students. I encourage and guide students to develop their own nuanced, in-depth perspectives on texts, supporting them to articulate, argue, and defend their ideas with clarity and confidence. By helping students engage with the multifaceted concepts within texts, I enable them to connect these insights to their own experiences and worldview, fostering both analytical skill and personal reflection. To further support my students’ success, I teach them how to unpack questions, identify exactly what is being asked, and develop structured, insightful responses that fully address the prompt. Overall, I strive to instill critical thinking skills in my students, equipping them not only for the HSC and internal assessments but also for broader intellectual growth.

I’m passionate about guiding students through the labyrinth that is HSC English. As a tutor, I focus on making English clear and accessible, giving students the confidence to perform at their very best. Bringing together my love for literature with a strong interest in analytical thinking, I understand the systems and methods that underpin English success – enabling students to achieve strong results while deepening their appreciation of the subject. I believe the support of a dedicated mentor is invaluable, and I provide this through tailored support that recognises each student’s unique strengths, challenges, and academic goals. Alongside improving marks, I guide students to think critically and express their ideas with clarity. English doesn’t need to feel inaccessible or intimidating; with the right guidance, we can transform it into a subject you genuinely enjoy.

My name is Ana-Sofia and I am an English and Art History student at the University of Sydney. I achieved three state rankings of 2nd in English Extension 2, 2nd in Italian Extension, and 5th in French Extension. I absolutely loved studying English, and learnt a lot through completing my 4 units of the subject. In my Bachelor of Arts I maintain a High Distinction average. I have been on the Dean’s List of Academic Excellence, and have attained numerous academic awards including the Maud Stiles Prize for a Woman Student in First Year English, the Dalyell Scholar Global Mobility Scholarship, and Frank McDonald Memorial Scholarship. I am extremely passionate about the study of English, as well as helping students realise their own unique ideas, responses, and voice through their studies.

My outlook on HSC English is that it is a subject heavily reliant on pattern recognition and skills developed through consistent practice over time. The HSC rewards personal voice, originality of ideas and clarity of expression when responding to unfamiliar questions and prompts - all of which are skills continually refined with feedback, redrafting and deliberate improvement. This informs my approach to tutoring English at Opus which upholds priorities of personalised, one-on-one learning and regular feedback. I aim to help students feel genuinely supported while equipping them with the ability to adapt under exam conditions as well as think critically throughout the entire process of writing and editing their work, ultimately allowing them to perform consistently at a high level.

Hi, I’m Meerab! I have loved writing and literature in all its forms for most of my life, particularly in the later years of high school where I took on 4 units of English, through which I developed a newfound passion for essay writing and honed my creative writing. I’ve always believed that the nature of an individual’s engagement with literature is dependant on their ability to interpret it as a form of art; in being able to appreciate every aspect of its composition as one would an artwork. In interacting with literary texts as such throughout my years of highschool, I have participated in an ongoing conversation with the form and features of language, one that I hope to invite my students into and collaborate with in developing and refining the skills required to successfully unravel and explicate the artistry of literature.

Hi, I'm Nirzara! During my HSC, I juggled 15 units, including 4 in English, which gave me unique insight into the mindset of both students who adore the subject and those who find it daunting. For me, English became more than just a subject—it was an outlet for self-expression, fueled by my fascination with how language shapes both our understanding of the world and our sense of self. As a science and literature enthusiast, I see English as a way to blend creativity with critical thinking. My approach to tutoring goes beyond marks; it’s about helping students discover their unique voice by connecting their passions to their study of English, which inevitably leads to stronger results and a deeper love for the subject. With extensive experience in tutoring English, I tailor my guidance to each student's strengths and interests, providing ongoing feedback and support to build confidence and push their academic performance to new heights!

Hi, I’m Gabriella, and I’m passionate about helping students reach their full potential in English! Having recently completed the HSC myself, I understand how challenging the journey can be - from analysing complex texts and writing essays under time pressure to managing the year’s workload. My goal is not only to make this process less overwhelming but also to help students exceed expectations, drawing on what I’ve learned about standing out in the subject. I believe English is at its most rewarding when students connect with the material in a meaningful way. And so, with insights from my own experience and a supportive, tailored approach, I focus on building the skills needed to craft impactful responses and express ideas that are both original and sophisticated.

Throughout my high school journey, I recognised the importance of passionate educators to help navigate the intimidating subject that is HSC English. In my experience as a learner, strong foundations in structure and analysis are key to crafting concise and clear essays. When teaching, these principles underpin my approach to ensure your sustained improvement and independence. Through tailored feedback, we will address gaps in practical components and will help you develop your personal voice, stylistic flair and literary confidence. Step by step, we will make English more approachable and rewarding.

As an avid reader and writer (having studied four units of English and five units of history) I can attest to how an improvement in English leads to an improvement across subjects, providing a foundation of excellent writing skills. My approach to teaching is one grounded in encouragement, where I aim to foster genuine engagement and a passion in literature. Through targeting critical thinking, and building adaptable skill sets, I know the importance of helping equip students with the ability to achieve their personal bests as they learn to develop a critical personal voice and argument — a new superpower that makes them able to tackle any exam question and essay task.

Hi, I'm Laurena! Throughout my high school journey, I developed a deep understanding of the skills needed to master HSC English. My passion for literature, in all its forms, stems from recognizing how it both interrogates and affirms different aspects of my worldview. I aim to create a supportive and engaging tutoring environment where students not only reach their academic goals but also cultivate a deeper appreciation for the critical thinking that comes from exploring texts. I truly believe that with the right guidance and mindset, anyone can excel in English—because, at its core, it's an iterative process that helps us better understand people and the world around us. I look forward to helping students harness and enact their own passion for literature in a way that unlocks their full potential.

I believe that personalised and constructive feedback is key to improvement in English. As someone who enjoyed writing especially during year 12, I intend to nurture a genuine interest and passion for learning within my students that extends even to the real world beyond the HSC. Through supportive guidance, English should feel accessible and engaging, and by breaking down complex texts together, my aim is to empower students to express their ideas with confidence. I look forward to being part of each student’s journey, to encourage students to enhance their critical thinking skills in order to achieve their academic goals :)

English has always been my favourite subject. Throughout high school I ranked first in English from Years 8-12, and I owe much of that journey to the inspiring and supportive English teachers who shaped both my confidence and love for the subject. In achieving a state rank of 15th in NSW for Advanced English, with a 100% Internal Average for Advanced, Extension 1 & Extension 2, I’ve learned that success in HSC English comes from honing skills of sophisticated adaptability, whilst developing meaningful, well-fleshed-out ideas through critical engagement. At Opus, I aim to create a fun, supportive and engaging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, experimenting with their writing and finding their own voice. Ultimately, I want students to enjoy English as much as I did and feel confident approaching any task :)

Hey, I’m Sidd! I truly understand how hard it is to write essays and short answer responses under the pressure of both limited time and the desire to achieve high scores. My approach to teaching is one grounded in ensuring that students balance ambition with fun, creating an environment where they can reach out to me with anything they need help with. I’m a firm believer in each student having unique approaches that help them ace their exams. Through developing their personal voice, various styles of writing and critical thinking skills, I hope to steer all my students towards the marks of their dreams, while becoming someone they can count on!
